Excerpt from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
(Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Sad—lol such a typically generic and stupid 90s Bollywood name for a movie)
Pooja-Rohan Heart to Heart From K3G
Akbar Khan · Hobbies/Interests—TV aur Movie Lines
Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) and his older, adopted brother, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), grew up with their parents in Delhi. Their father, Yash (Amitabh Bachchan), had chosen the “perfect” girl for Rahul. But Rahul fell in love with—and married—Anjali (Kajol), a girl of much lower social status. The dad and Rahul had a huge falling out. Rahul and his love-match wife left for London with her younger sister, Pooja—“Poo” (Kareena Kapoor)—to escape the dad’s behavior. Years later, Rohan finds out where Rahul is living and goes to that fair city to bring his brother and sister-in-law back home, to end the estrangement from their dad.

English translation
POOJA: You know, Rohan: my older sister always says that a married woman whose husband is still alive brings together a wife and a daughter-in-law, like a river delta. She became a wife, but was not able to become a daughter-in-law.
And her husband, who is also older than me, well...not a second goes by that he doesn’t think about his estrangement from his parents back home in New Delhi. But he never says anything. He’s put their photograph up on the wall, but he’s not once turned to look at it.
Here in London, we’ve made a little world for ourselves. If you look at it from afar, things seem so happy. But the closer you get, the more sadness you’ll see.
Why have you come here now, Rohan? Why now?
ROHAN: Pooja, I promised my older brother that I’d never ask anyone where he went or why he left. But today I’ve come to understand that he no longer considers us his own family. And I can’t bear it. I can’t bear it.
I’ve left some broken relationships behind, Pooja—relationships that only my older brother can turn back into a family.
I’ve come to bring my brother back. I’ve come to bring my sister-in-law back.
But I can’t do this alone. I need your help, Pooja. Look at me, Pooja. Say: you’re with me in this. Are you?
POOJA: Smiles and nods.
